A: It is nearly impossible to find a Chevelle of that vintage with the original engine or with an unmodified engine. To determine what the engine really is (or once was), you need to get the serial number from the block and the part number from the heads. Also, the casting mark on the end of the heads will indicate what version they are. You can’t tell what combination you have just by looking, since all of the small block engines from a 283 to a 400 are basically the same on the outside. You have to get the numbers and research.

Q: i was wanting to know did a 70-72 chevelles come with a small block 400 or was it just 283 305 307 350 so on?
I have a small block 400 which I was going to build up but I am in search of a 396 to put in my chevelleIf anyone has one and willing to part I would like to know I also am looking to sell or trade the 400 .

A: If they are restored or mint condition and not a wreck, they can cost up to 120,000 dollars, since they’re old. I’m glad someone else agrees that the chevelle is a sick car, and not just some old thing

A: I am a ‘67 Chevelle SS396 with a big block. I give 350 HP with a turbo kick .My interior is black and my exterior is a shiny candy apple red. My owner bought me when I wasn’t in the best of shape and spent her hard earned money to get me where I am today. Her dad and brother helped her fix me up and now I purr like a kitten, but can roar when I need to.
She takes great care of me and we get a lot of looks together.

A: Your question doesn’t take into account the different engines or emission control crap, but I’d guess the Camaro all things being equal due its better aerodynamics.

A: rarest would be the 1st Chevy ever built.

I have been looking at old Chevelles and noticed that they are mainly automatic. I was wondering if it would be possible to convert one to manual, like changing the motor completly.

A: Sure, it’s possible.

While you don’t need a new engine, you will need the manual transmission, the clutch assembly, the gear shifter assy., the clutch pedal, etc. , etc., etc.

It’s easiest if you can find a donor car but that may prove to be difficult for an older car such as a Chevelle. It is a time consuming job as well.
